I started weight training in my early forties, after an injury stopped me running for a while. I was amazed to find how rewarding and empowering it was to feel myself becoming measurably stronger and leaner, even though I was getting older.
Finding myself attempting heavier weights or more difficult movements was such a confident boost. This soon spilled over into other areas of my life and I felt stronger personally, better able to deal with the challenges of work, relationships and parenting.
After nearly 10 years strength training I feel transformed inside and out. I can deadlift 200 lbs and do strict pull ups so I'm a lot less bothered about grey hairs and fine lines. I move so much more easily than when I was younger. Now I look to the years ahead with excitement rather than dread.
Like others, I have my bucket list of things to do when the nest is empty but unlike many people I know I'm putting myself in the best position to achieve this. by staying strong and mobile.
Yes, growing older is inevitable. Mother Nature is against us (especially women!) in so many ways.
But we can fight back.
